What changes the price of electrical work

The home's age and existing wiring

Older homes often need more work than the line item suggests. In Fort Collins, 30.6% of homes were built before 1980, and in ZIP code 80521, which covers most of Old Town and the CSU area, the median year built is 1978 (ACS 2024 5-year). A contractor may find an undersized service, ungrounded circuits or aluminum branch wiring. The CPSC says homes built between 1965 and the mid-1970s may have aluminum wiring and approves only three permanent repairs: a copper rewire, COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors.

Panel and service capacity

Adding an EV charger, heat pump or induction range can push an older 100 A service past its limit. That is often where a $700–$2,000 charger job grows into a panel upgrade as well. A load-sharing device can sometimes avoid a full upgrade, so ask contractors whether one would work for your home.

Permits and inspections

Inside city limits, the City of Fort Collins Building Services, not the state, issues electrical permits and inspects. Typical inspection stages are underground, rough, energize and final, scheduled in Accela Citizen Access (Building Services: 970-416-2740). Loveland, Windsor, Wellington, Timnath and unincorporated Larimer County each have their own permit office, so fees and steps differ. This is general information, not legal advice.

Utility service-upgrade costs

The City's Home Electrification page says service-upgrade costs vary widely and electrician bids usually do not include Fort Collins Utilities' service-upgrade costs. This is the most common gap between two quotes, so ask each contractor in writing whether it is included.

Access, distance and finish work

Finished basements, vaulted ceilings, long runs to a detached garage and drywall patching all add labor. Some contractors include patching and some leave it to you.

Rebates and financing that can lower the cost

Some projects may qualify for Efficiency Works rebates for Fort Collins Utilities and Loveland customers, effective January 1, 2026. Rebates change and need a listed service provider. Check efficiencyworks.org before you sign.

  • $500 for a panel upgrade to 200 A or more, installed by a licensed electrician and paired with an induction range, Level 2 EV charger, heat pump, heat pump water heater, or solar/battery.
  • $250 for a load-sharing device where the existing service is under 200 A.
  • Heat pumps: $1,500–$2,000 per ducted unit, plus a possible $2,000 bundling bonus.
  • Epic Loan on-bill financing up to $50,000 over up to 15 years.

You generally apply within 45 days and funding is limited. There is no residential EV-charger rebate; charger rebates are for public and business chargers only. Read more in the Efficiency Works panel rebate guide and what a utility service upgrade costs.

How to compare electrical quotes

  • Confirm the contractor's Colorado electrical contractor registration and its master electrician's license with the DORA license lookup.
  • Inside Fort Collins, confirm the contractor is registered with the City.
  • Ask who pulls the permit and that it is pulled before work starts.
  • Ask for proof of insurance.
  • Get a written quote that says whether the utility's service-upgrade costs are included.

Electrician cost questions

How much does an electrician cost per hour in Fort Collins?

Published national cost guides put typical electrician rates at about $50–$130 per hour, often with a $100–$200 service call or trip fee. No Fort Collins-specific price source has been published, so treat these as estimates. Rates vary with the contractor, the license level of the person doing the work and the time of day, so ask each contractor how they bill.

How much is a 200 amp panel upgrade in Fort Collins?

National guides list a 100 A to 200 A panel upgrade at about $750–$2,000, not counting new branch wiring. In Fort Collins, the City says electrician bids usually do not include Fort Collins Utilities' service-upgrade costs, which vary widely. Ask whether your written quote includes them, and check whether you may qualify for the Efficiency Works $500 panel incentive.

Is there a rebate for a home EV charger in Fort Collins?

Not for the charger itself. Fort Collins Utilities lists Efficiency Works charger rebates for businesses and multifamily properties only. A panel upgrade to 200 A or more that is paired with a Level 2 EV charger may qualify for a $500 Efficiency Works incentive, and a load-sharing device may qualify for $250. Check efficiencyworks.org before you sign.

Why do electrical quotes in Fort Collins vary so much?

Quotes depend on the home's age, the panel and service size, how far wire has to run, wall and ceiling access, permit fees and whether utility work is needed. One contractor may include drywall patching or the permit and another may not. Compare the written scope line by line rather than the bottom number alone, and ask what is excluded.

Are the prices on this page quotes?

No. They are typical national ranges from published cost guides (2025–2026) and are estimates only. Electrician Fort Collins is a quote service and does not set prices. Independent local electrical contractors provide quotes after learning about your home, and each contractor sets its own prices, terms and warranties.
